Androgen Deficiency - Hormonal Men?

Female hormones, its fluctuations and treatments are common topics of discussion on websites, magazines and forums. However, not much emphasis is placed on male hormones, even though there are many men suffering from low male hormone levels. And as not many men realize they suffer from hormone problems, very few treated for low male hormones.

The condition where a man has a low male hormone level is called androgen deficiency. It can be treated with testosterone supplements in the form of injections, gels, patches and creams.

Not many men are aware of low male hormones

Research has proven that only one in 9 men suffering from low male hormones gets treated. The main reason for this is because they are not aware of their reduced male hormone levels, as measuring the male hormone or testosterone levels is not normal and its symptoms are usually mistaken for symptoms of some other health condition.

In addition to this, if a man is diagnosed for androgen deficiency, not all of them consider treatment. This is because to a man, the benefits of treatment for androgen deficiency tend to be outweighed its risks. The risks associated with androgen deficiency treatment include prostate enlargement, fluid retention and a bad sleep disorder.

Symptoms of androgen deficiency

Basically, a man has to be treated for low testosterone levels if he suffers from low bone density or osteoporosis, low sex drive or libido and has problems with sexual function like erectile dysfunction. Even men who experience lowered energy levels and tend to exhibit a reduced physical performance may have to be treated for low testosterone levels.

A blood sample is taken to test for hormone levels, and to find out if a man suffers from androgen deficiency. However, as testosterone levels tend to vary over time, a single blood test may not be sufficient to determine androgen deficiency. Moreover, often other health problems may lead to the symptoms a man suffers from, and not androgen deficiency.

Factors leading to androgen deficiency

There are various factors that may bring about androgen deficiency in a man like use of some medications such as corticosteroids, excessive consumption of alcohol, radiation or chemotherapy, injury or infection of testicles and hemochromatosis.

Apart from the symptoms mentioned above, it is advisable to contact your doctor for androgen deficiency if you suffer from loss of muscle mass, reduction in facial and body hair, infertility, depression and irritability, poor concentration and increased breast size.

Remember that it is the doctor who is the best person to decide on the right treatment option for your reduced male hormone levels.
