Blood in Your Semen: Cause for Alarm?
Since most ejaculate is a milky, off-white color, it is understandable that a man would become worried if he noticed that there was blood in his semen. In fact, this usually
sends a wave of panic and fear through someone who notices this difference. Most men automatically assume that blood in the semen is caused by sexually transmitted diseases
or cancer, but this is often not the case.
Blood in the semen is relatively common and is known to doctors as hematospermia. While this is a sign that there is a problem
and you should go to your doctor to get checked over, it is usually not serious enough to cause alarm.
Most men who suffer from hematospermia are in their mid to late thirties. This problem is usually associated with an inflammation of either the prostate or the urethra.
Sometimes the reason behind the swelling is not known, but it is commonly believed by many doctors that the cause is connected to a problem or infection that will clear
itself out.
Many times the blood in the semen will go away over time without any treatment on the part of the doctor if the patient has no other problems or symptoms
of a larger issue. About one fifth of the men who experience this problem will have not have a reoccurring spell.
Sometimes hematospermia can be a symptom of a urinary infection, and if this is the case the person suffering from the bloody sperm will also have discomfort when
urinating or will show signs of a problem during a physical exam.
Another indicator of a urinary problem is the presence of blood in the urine as well. This is
often evaluated through the use of a urine sample. If urinary problems are the root cause, then the problem can easily be treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory
medications.
In a very small percentage of those who have hematospermia cancer can be an underlying cause. Other problems that can be associated with blood in the sperm are cysts,
stones, hemophilia, chronic liver disease, parasitic infection, and tuberculosis.
So, even seeing red in your sperm is an indicator that you need to go to your doctor
and get a physical, it does not necessarily mean that you have a major problem.
