Body Shaving: Cause of Bacterial Infections

Egyptians and Greeks launched the idea of male-depilation when they first offered a prize to the first man who appeared hairless in public. The modern age has different standards regarding this issue.

If women try different methods of (d)epilation because the lack of hair is a symbol of beauty, erotism, for most men the presence of body hair remains a declaration of virility.

The number of men who choose depilation is seemingly increasing, especially those who practice sport and prefer their gym-worked forms to be seen. But which are the risks of (d)epilation? First of all, "epilation" is not equal to "depilation". The first means the removal of hair from the entire surface of the body, permanently, with the help of laser or electrolysis; the later implies the use of temporary methods, wax or different electronic machines; depilation is what you do while shaving, strictly referring to the removal of the hair from the skin surface.

But there are several disadvantages and risks that have to be taken into consideration. Many of the hair removal methods are expensive, not permanent, and can cause medical problems. Removing hair could be considered a risk because information about one's hair growth patterns due to illness, androgen levels (hormonal imbalances, drug side effects), genetic predisposition and/or gender status are also removed. The temporary methods are not as risky as the previous ones; the indications are only made regarding possible irritations on the skin and allergic reactions (to depilatory creams). Patients' body hair was once shaved before surgery for hygienic reasons; this turned out counter-productive; patients are no longer shaved in many hospitals. The risk of bacterial infections also exists. There are two main types of bacterial infections: local and systemic.

Local infections appear when bacteria localize and multiply at the level at which they get into the organism. If not treated well they can extend and can lead to the development of a systemic infection. The bacteria passes into the blood, affecting one or more organs (pneumonias, urinary infections, meningitis). Systemic infections represent severe affections that can put life at risk if the correct antibiotic treatment is not applied.

Shaving can be the cause of folliculitis, (inflammation of the folliculs), infection that can be dangerous if not treated. When a razorblade is used, there is the risk of cutting; given the case the razorblade has been used before (by another person) the possibility of being infected with HIV or other disease increases. A variety of staph infection, known as "community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus" , was identified following an outbreak among gay men. Among the risk factors for transmission of this infection is "compromised skin integrity." Researchers determined that manscaping (hair removal performed with a dry safety razor and powder) could produce micro-abrasions of the skin, compromising its integrity.

Men who manscape are six times more likely to contract the disease. To avoid being infected, researchers recommend to discontinue the practice of body shaving.
