Understanding Genital Herpes in Men

A genital herpes outbreak is an outbreak of a sexually transmitted disease. It is easier to spread the disease when there is an outbreak, but it is still possible to pass it along to your partner even when you are not experiencing symptoms.

It can be difficult to detect the disease in men when there is not an outbreak, but your doctor can give you a blood test to determine if you are infected with the disease. There is no cure for genital herpes and those who are infected will have the condition for life.

The symptoms that are the most common with genital herpes in men are the ulcers or sores that appear on the genitals. This is not the only symptom that could indicate you have genital herpes, however. Some patients have reported painful urination as well. There are some patients who never experience the symptoms of the disease and pass it along to others because they are unaware that they have the condition. It is estimated that thirty percent of the population has some type of herpes. Most carriers of the herpes virus have HSV-1 which causes cold sores and fever blisters.

While genital herpes in men may not present with an outbreak, typically the first outbreak is the most severe. Many people experience flu like symptoms along with the sores. In the beginning stages of the virus, the outbreaks will be more severe and frequent. Some people experience outbreaks every month, while others only every few months. As the virus continues, the outbreaks will become less frequent and severe.

Genital herpes and men can be managed very effectively with medications and precautions. A diagnosis of herpes does not have to mean the end of your sex life. However, it is important that safety precautions be used during sexual relations every time. Medications can lessen the severity of symptoms and even prevent outbreaks from occurring.

Men should use precautions for every sexual encounter regardless of whether they have genital herpes or not. It is a condition that can be spread without either partner knowing that they are infected. This strengthens the case for safe sex practices every single time.

Keep in mind that the herpes sores or ulcers are very contagious. Take care to refrain from sexual intercourse during an outbreak of the condition.
