What You Should Expect After Experiencing a Penile Fracture

A penile fracture is a very painful and dangerous problem, and in fact it is considered to be a urologic emergency by most doctors. This problem occurs when the penis is erect and is suddenly hit or bent at a ninety degree angle. If you suffer from a penile fracture, then it is likely that your doctor is going to recommend surgery in order to make sure that you can retain full use of your penis for urinary and sexual purposes.

Not only does the surgery work to make sure that your penis will function properly when you urinate, but it can also reduce any painful side effects as well as work to ensure that you will not be experiencing erectile dysfunction. Many times in the past doctors did not do surgery on penile fractures, but rather they treated them with pressure bandages, splints, cold compresses, and medicine. However, this often caused problems in the future.

Now with surgery most patients can make a full recovery from penile fractures. While you might be worried about surgery in your genital region, you should know that this is really the best option to avoid any future complications. Problems that were reported by those who used traditional therapy instead of turning to surgery were near fifty percent.

Some of these complications included pain during sex, permanent penile curvature, painful erections, abscesses on the penis, the formation of nodules at the fracture site, and erectile dysfunction. Not to mention the fact that patients who underwent surgery often recovered quicker and were subject to shorter hospital stays.

Many times penile fractures occur during sexual encounters, so men are often hesitant to report them, but you should know that the longer you wait to report an injury like this the more complications can arise. In fact, the most common way for this problem to occur is when the penis slips out during sex and instead hits the pubic bone.

Sexual encounters account for nearly one third of all reported cases of penile fracture, but this problem can occur outside of sex as well. In order to make sure that you make a full recovery you will want to talk to your doctor about any pain or problems you are experiencing as soon as they occur.
