Penile Prosthesis: Positive Solution For Erectile Dysfunction
Ninety percent of men fitted with a penile prosthesis or implant are able to
have sexual intercourse with satisfactory results, according to a study of
nearly 500 men aged 21 to 78 year old.
Erectile dysfunction
(ED) is the inability to get or sustain an erection
for sexual activity. Luckily, most men with ED only lose power to have
adequate erections
. There are many treatment options available for
those suffering from this disorder.
Drugs are not an option for some men suffering erectile dysfunction.
Implanting a penile prosthesis is an effective treatment, especially
for men with irreversible erectile dysfunction. The simplest type of
prosthesis comprises of a set of bendable rods surgically placed in
the body. This implant is semi-rigid and only needs to be adjusted
into the erect position for sex
. Many men choose the inflatable prosthesis
that permits an erection whenever a man chooses. It's easier to conceal
and more natural.
When the penis
is inflated, the prosthesis makes the penis stiff and thick,
similar to a natural erection. Most men rate the erection as shorter than
their normal erection; however, newer models have cylinders that may
increase the length, thickness, and stiffness of the penis.
The prosthesis doesn't change skin sensation of the penis or the ability to
reach orgasm. A penile prosthesis may destroy a natural erection reflex.
Erection can't be reached without inflating the implant and if removed,
a man may not ever have another natural erection.
Penile implants are normally used when there is a medical cause for ED and
there is unlikely to improve with medical treatments.
Studies have shown that:
- One common reason for choosing penile implants were diabetes and
vascular disease. Also men with radical pelvic surgery and spinal
cord injuries are candidates for implants.
- Patient satisfaction rates are high.
- The actual operation is satisfactory to most men. If a man was
dissatisfied it could be from the removal due to infections
or mechanical failure.
- Some complications occurred after the operation including short-term
urinary retention and wound infections. Some of the major complications could
be prosthesis infection or mechanical failure.
ED sufferers have several options available to them including the new
anti-impotence drugs. Penile implants play an important role in
continuing to provide a viable treatment option for erectile dysfunction.
