Phimosis - When It's Not Good To Be Tight
Phimosis is the technical term that describes when the foreskin of the penis is too tight. Here's what you need to know about it.
Phimosis occurs when the foreskin cannot be drawn back over the tip of the penis. Infant boys always have this condition because the foreskin is usually
very small and tight at a young age. It is not considered a problem until a boy reaches puberty.
In adolescence and adulthood, phimosis is no laughing matter: It can be very painful and impossible for a man to have an erection. Also the urine stream
may be blocked. However, there are varying degrees of phimosis. Some men have no difficulty with a partially retracting foreskin.
There are many causes for phimosis. Diabetic men, who have large amounts of sugar in their urine, often have problems with bacteria breeding under their
foreskins, thus resulting in phimosis. If a man repeatedly needs a catheter for medical treatment, phimosis can be a side effect. Likewise if there is
a chronic inflammation, phimosis can result.
Many boys and men are not at risk for phimosis because they were circumcised, usually as infants. Circumcision has also long been the primary treatment
for phimosis: While the male is under a general anesthetic, his foreskin is cut away from the glans. It is considered a minor surgical procedure.
There is also a partial circumcision procedure called preputioplasty.
Today, there are other treatments available. A steroid cream can be applied over a period of one to two months. The foreskin can also be stretched, as
in masturbation. In another method, balloons can be placed under the foreskin, either by hand or with special tools. According to Wikipedia, this
procedure expands the surrounding tissue, promoting the growth of new skin cells that permanently expands the narrow preputial ring that prevents
retraction of the foreskin.
One treatment that should never be used is to try to retract the foreskin by force. Using force can damage the tissues. While it may be embarrassing,
it is best to consult a doctor for treatment.
While people can joke about phimosis, it is no laughing matter to someone with the condition. Fortunately treatment is very easy and readily available.
There's no reason to suffer more than necessary.
