Sexsomnia in Men
Sexsomnia, otherwise known as sleep sex, is a very rare and varied condition where people perform sexual acts in their sleep. These acts are usually combined to and
include sleepwalking, and occur in those who are already prone to sleepwalking. Both males and females are capable of suffering from sexsomnia and because it is considered
a form of non rapid eye movement persona, they usually do not know what they are doing while they are doing it.
Sexsomnia has only been openly discussed and garnered national attention in the last few years due to several high profile cases in which people are said to have suffered
from the condition. In several court cases, victims awoke to being raped, but their assailants claimed to not realize what they were doing because they were still asleep
when the assaults occurred.
Sexsomnia behavior during sleep can include many sexual acts, not just sexual intercourse. Those who suffer from the condition experience arousal while they are asleep and
then perform acts to respond to their arousals. Many times this can include getting up out of bed and walking around until they find a partner to have sexual intercourse
with willingly or not.
This behavior can be very painful for sufferers and their mates, though most of the time it is emotional and causes strains on the relationship. In many cases, sexual
acts are not always carried out with a bedmate because the condition includes sleepwalking. Therefore, couples must then deal with one partner having sexual intercourse
with potential strangers and all the unknowns that come along with those actions.
While there is not a single definitive cure for sexsomnia, it is recognized as a form of sleep disorder and treated similarly. Parasomnia has been treated with drugs
and therapy in the past and doctors have experienced some success at treating sexsomnia similarly. In some cases only therapy is needed as sleep disorders are mainly
thought to be a “disconnect” between the mind and the body. These cases require constant work and attention through therapy sessions, but it seems to be very effective
when it does work. Other patients require the prescription and use of drugs to help them overcome sleepwalking, and these same drugs are used for those that experience
sex while they sleep.
Even though sexsomnia is very rare and even more misunderstood, it should be clear that it is not a disease, nor necessarily unhealthy.
