Think Sexual Fantasies To Improve Pain tolerance

Thinking about a favorite sexual fantasy could lessen pain. Researchers have studied the results of having an optimistic emotional reaction on pain. By examining the relationship between pain and mood, researchers hope to find a easy, low cost way to diminish pain in many medical conditions.

Doctors should address sufferers who are experiencing pain in a new way. The theory that stimuli to pain can produce strong negative emotional reaction suggests that the opposite should be true. A positive emotional response to pain may decrease pain.

The study by Staat's points out the opinion that feelings are processed in the thalamus. This area of the brain is tightly involved in how pain reactions are processed. The study involved forty students. They were asked to place one hand in a tank of ice water, leaving it until they could no longer endure the pain.

The second time they put their hand in, they were divided into groups. Each group was asked to either think of a favorite sexual fantasy, visualize a non-preferred sexual fantasy or have a neutral fantasy with the final group given no instructions at all. Mood, pain, and worry were measured during each immersion.

The sexual preference group were able to tolerate the ice water twice as long as the other groups. They also experienced less pain, handling pain better. They were less nervous, depressed and calmer.

The suggestion of emotions when treating patients is powerful. Before 1950, doctors used the power of suggestion as a major mode of treatment. Today, physicians don't take the time to really talk to their patients. They don't listen to his fears and anxieties. Thinking and hearing positive thoughts has an impact on a patients response to pain.

Previous studies done at Arizona State University supports Staats's work. The studies were focused on the causes and effects of emotion on behavior. Someday, a doctors first question to a patient confronting a painful procedure will be about favorite sexual fantasies.
